The Planting of Sulla: Supporting Our Olive Trees Organically

Each March at Magamila, we begin an important agricultural practice: the planting of Sulla. This humble plant plays a key role in how we care for our olive trees, using only organic and natural methods.

Sulla (Sulla coronaria) is a flowering legume traditionally grown in Sicily. What makes it so valuable is its ability to naturally regenerate nitrogen in the soil. Nitrogen is essential for healthy plant growth, and Sulla gently returns it to the earth without the need for chemical fertilizers. As the plant grows and later breaks down, it enriches the soil, improves its structure, and helps olive tree roots access nutrients more easily. This practice, often called green manure, is a cornerstone of sustainable and organic farming.

For us, planting Sulla is about working with nature rather than against it. It supports the long-term health of our olive groves and keeps the land fertile for future seasons.

Sulla also plays a beautiful role beyond the olive trees. When it blooms, its vivid red flowers attract bees from our hives. The bees feed on the Sulla flowers, producing our distinctive, delicate honey known as Sulla Honey. This natural cycle — soil, flower, bee, honey — is one we are deeply proud of.

From nourishing our trees to shaping the flavor of our honey, Sulla connects every part of life at Magamila.
